New Premises

In 2018 as the business was rapidly expanding, we found ourselves in need of more space and so we purchased Unit 2, The Wheatsheaf in Elland.

The Wheatsheaf was historically an old public house which first opened in 1824 and is located just down from St Mary’s Church and backs onto the church graveyard. It closed around 1935 and was purchased by Ely Garnett & Sons, a local wool merchant, and extended at the rear. This extension subsequently became Unit 2.

Unit 2 was used for many purposes over the years, including a wool merchants warehouse and a joiners shop. The building itself was effectively just a shell when we purchased it however many original features still remained such as the old roof trusses.

The Renovation Project

After much thought on the look we wanted to achieve, we undertook a renovation that took almost 20 weeks to completion as we worked around other ongoing client projects.

The building still contained features such as original beams, flooring and underneath the coating of peeling white paint was a potentially stunning, red brick wall.
The basement was fully tanked out and made damp proof to become storage with the creation of a separate, bright office space.

Upstairs the walls and beams were sandblasted to remove the old, peeling paint revealing stunning timber beams and the red brick walls we had first noticed. We installed two new floor spaces within the roof space. One became a loft conversion complete with its own ensuite, fitted wardrobes, oak and glass panel staircase and a fully working Velux Cabrio balcony window. The other became a dormer conversion again with fitted wardrobes, velux windows and an ensuite.

The main floor space was opened up, velux windows installed to allow the natural light to flood in and the floor sanded down to reveal the natural beauty of the timber. Desks were all bespoke and hand made by our talented joinery team using wood reclaimed from the floor, while filing space was created from reclaimed scaffolding boards.

Some features were deliberately left exposed to show off the workmanship that clients normally don’t get to see during a renovation, such as pipework and wiring.

We also created a brand new entrance to the building with oak and glass doors and also opened up the original deliveries entrance to install bi-fold doors.
The entire project was one of a labour of love and attention with the aim of creating not only a light, bright and welcoming office space but also a fully working showroom for clients to come and look around to get ideas, see how it all works and understand how this could be transferred to their own homes. Our showroom is the only one of its kind in the area.

Going Forward

We are excited to continue building and expanding the business. Recently, our basement office space was acquired by Vanessa Thornton Interiors, a fantastic interior designer who works on both domestic and commercial projects.
